Strawberries

Surely everyone’s favourite fruit, the strawberry, contains many vital vitamins and nutrients. They are an excellent source of Vitamins A and C and folic acid. Strawberries also contain potassium, anti-oxidants (including the particularly potent free radical fighter, ellagic acid), fibre and quercetin which helps to fight against several types of viruses. They are rich in disease-fighting phytochemicals that have been shown to prevent cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stomach ulcers and can help lower cholesterol levels.

Unfortunately the news is not good for everyone - strawberries can cause urticaria in sensitive individuals – this is because they release histamine, resulting in an immune response.

The best berries to eat are deep red, quite firm and have a smooth sheen. Try to avoid dull and shrivelled strawberries with darkened or loosened caps as they are past their best so the flavour and nutrient content will have diminished. Store in a paper bag or in airtight container with a paper towel as excess water causes the strawberries to decompose. For maximum freshness keep strawberries refrigerated until a few hours before eating. Enjoy!
