Pomegranate
The pomegranate is a popular exotic fruit originating from the Middle East and Asia recognisable by its round shape, hard yellow and red skin, and by its unusual interior flesh that contains many small edible seeds. The seeds are an excellent source of Vitamin C and contain riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, calcium and phosphorous plus have no fat or cholesterol.
Pomegranate juice is a popular tipple for people concerned about coronary heart disease – it not only appears to prevent hardening of the arteries by reducing blood vessel damage, but the antioxidant-rich juice may also reverse the progression of this disease which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. The antioxidant level in pomegranate juice is higher than that found in other fruit juices, including blueberry, cranberry and orange, plus red wine and green tea.
Pomegranates are best bought from August to November and if purchasing ensure the fruit is hard to touch, its skin is not dull and choosing pomegranates with a heavier weight will guarantee freshness.
Pomegranate juice is available from any good health food shop – including Framar Health of course!
